Objective

The AI Engineer Project brings together professional engineers, engineering associations, AI risk and safety experts, and those interested in licensure to help pave a path for AI professionals to enter the engineering profession, with all of its duties of care and responsibility.

Motivation

In Canada, the title of Engineer can only be used by those who are licensed and thereby expected to meet technical, ethical and legal standards of their profession. There is increasing awareness of public safety concerns around AI, and increasing interest in the licensing of AI Engineers responsible for ensuring public safety. The AI Engineer Project brings together diverse stakeholders to pave a way forward to professional licensing of AI Engineers in Canada.

Approach

Over its 12-month duration, this collaborative project will invite input from a growing number of stakeholders, starting now. Inputs from academia, engineering associations, guidance and standards groups, investors, manufacturers, and others are welcomed!

Urgency

Now is the best time to provide a path to an AI Engineer title in Canada for at least several reasons:

  • 2025 brings with it a lot of corporate momentum behind the creation and adoption of AI products and services. We need engineers to help continuously identify and manage AI risks and emerging ethical issues.
  • Foreign multi-national corporations have long used the title AI Engineer in unregulated environments, creating pressure to normalize its use in Canada. This risks having the title of Engineer in Canada loose its intention protecting the public.
  • AI safety is a global concern, and the Professional Engineers Act is meant to help protect public safety. We need to empower engineers applying AI to build a society that is safe for all.
  • Despite Canadian demand for product and services infused with AI, professional guidance is currently lacking for quality and reliability of AI design, validation, test and deployment. This is a rectifiable situation.
  • A regulated AI Engineer title would provide a higher standard for Canadian AI products and services, differentiating Canadian AI for trading partners with similar standards.
